Building In Budapest Evacuated As Column Falls
Fire fighters evacuated a five-storey residential building on Damjanich utca in Budapest’s Seventh District on Wednesday, after a pillar collapsed. The structure was said to be in critical condition as the four-metre high pillar at a corner of the building fell away.

The pillar presumably fell out because of excavation work nearby.

Fire-fighters escorted 18 people from 17 homes for their own safety and provided for their accommodation.

Some of the residents were allowed to return to their homes late Wednesday evening, after the building was bolstered with a temporary wooden structure.

Experts will shore up the building today, when everybody can return to their homes.
