Hungarian Govt Outraged No One Accountable For Red Sludge Disaster
“The Government finds it outrageous that nobody has been made accountable in such a serious case as the red sludge disaster, which also claimed 10 lives”, Minister of State for Government Communication Bence Tuzson said on M1 Hungarian Television in reaction to the ruling by the Veszprém Court of Justice to acquit those charged with causing the disaster.

Mr. Tuzson also said that the Government would like to strive for justice to win the day and so is “strongly urging” the authorities to appeal the decision because “the truth must come out”.

The Government has already regulated this area and it is important that suitable security systems are installed and the authorities also perform their duties accordingly to ensure that such a catastrophe can never happen again, he stated.

However, if a disaster of this nature has already occurred, the truth and reality “must not be hidden”, he added.

The Veszprém Court of Justice acquitted all fifteen defendants of the red sludge case at first instance on Thursday in view of the fact that no crime had been proven to exist.

The Court acquitted the defendants of the charges of endangering life through negligently causing a public danger, negligent damage to nature and the environment and infringing waste management regulations.

According to the court, the disaster that occurred on 4 October 2010 was caused by “loss of stability originating in the topsoil”, which led to the weakening of the reservoir’s embankment.
