- 24 May 2016 10:08 AM
On view until June 9, 2016 (visitors are welcome by appointment)
Sayre Gomez will present for his exhibition in conjunction with his month long residence in Budapest a new series of paintings based on trompe-l'œil. Trompe-l'œil, literally translates to “deceive the eye”, and is a method of representational painting in which elements of a flat two dimensional picture plane are painted to appear in three dimensions.
The technique dates back to the Renaissance and is comparable to the earliest illustrations of perspective. The method has also been associated with important Surrealist painters such as Rene Magritte.
Examples of trompe-l'œil also feature prominently in our daily routines as well: walls painted to look like marble or wood, advertisements featuring an image with a torn edge and a drop shadow, a page turning magically on its own, or a vending machine covered in illustrated sweat. In the works made for this exhibition the artist uses the some of the most conventional aspects of this approach to painting as way to continue his explorations into the ideas of value labor, contradiction, and authorship.
Born in 1982 in Chicago, Il, the artist received his BFA from The Art Institute of Chicago in 2005 and his MFA in 2008 from CalArts in Los Angeles. He works in a variety of media including painting, sculpture, and video. His exhibitions reflect a highly considered approach to exhibition design and his paintings often site windows as a way to contextualize the imagery he uses.
He has most-recently been the focus solo exhibitions at Michael Jon and Alan in Miami, Fl. (2016) Galerie Nagel/Draxler in Cologne, DE. (2015) and Francois Ghebaly in Los Angeles, Ca. (2014) He has been featured in group exhibitions at Sies + Hoke in Düsseldorf, DE., IBID in London, UK., Galeria Marlborough, Madrid, ES., Clearing, Brooklyn, Ny., In 2013 he curated in collaboration with JPW3 the exhibition CULM at Night Gallery in Los Angeles, Ca. His works have been featured in Artforum, The LA Times, Contemporary Art Daily, Art Agenda, Mousse, Terremoto, and Artillery. His work is part of the Rubell Family Collection in Miami, FL.
