The European Commission confirmed to Brussels website Politico on Friday that it is considering whether to investigate whether the pro-government media conglomerate Kesma established in Hungary last November is a beneficiary of illegal state aid.
An order signed by Prime Minister Viktor Orbán exempted the conglomeration of hundreds of news outlets from competition and media rules, Politico notes.
A statement said “the Commission has received state aid complaints concerning the financing of the Hungarian broadcasting system. Our assessment is ongoing in line with our standard procedures.”
Competition Commissioner Margrethe Vestager added that it is too early to talk about details.
