City-Owned Spas in Hungary May be Bought by Gov't
The government is considering a plan to expropriate spas from local governments, with the argument that they do not have sufficient finances to pay the high energy bills, Telex learned from a draft suggesting “a rethink of the ownership structure of the spas”.

The operation of these spas may eventually be given out as a concession, according to plans being prepared by the Growth and Competitiveness Cabinet led by Economy Development Minister Márton Nagy.

These affected spas may include the Gellért, Lukács, Széchenyi and Rudas baths in Budapest, as well as spas in Hévíz, Gyula, Harkány, Zalakaros and Hajdúszoboszló in the countryside.

Telex writes that the government is targeting local-council owned spas in the first round. Those that are private or church-owned are not affected. In other words, for example, the Hunguest Hotel chain controlled by Lőrinc Mészáros can relax, as the nationalisation of its spa in Egerszalók is not on the agenda, Telex adds.

The programme names approximately 90 of the more than 400 spas in Hungary, of which 35 are significant for tourism.
