Átlátszó Defies Hungary's Sovereignty Office
Átlátszó, the investigative website, has firmly rebuffed efforts by the Sovereignty Protection Office to investigate its activities, claiming the new agency has no legal power to do so.

"We are neither a political party nor a nominating organisation, nor do we exercise public authority, therefore we will not co-operate with the Sovereignty Protection Office,” the site stated on its home page.

In addition to Transparency International Hungary, the Sovereignty Protection Office announced on June 25 that it was launching a comprehensive investigation into Átlátszó.

The Sovereignty Office alleges that Átlátszó "is engaged in or supports activities aimed at influencing the will of voters by using foreign funding".

The Office’s initial letter to Átlátszó poses 11 questions, covering public data, accounting details, and funding from international donors.

Átlátszó replied that it is not obliged to answer the questions, stating that it does not engage in political campaigning, while also stressing that it provides information publicly and to anyone who asks, as available on its website.
