Record Levels of Emigration by Hungarians
Almost 35,800 people emigrated from Hungary last year, a 24% increase over the 2022 figure, and a new record high, the Central Statistics Office reports.

The previous record high was recorded in 2015, when 32,900 people left the country.

The data, categorised by destination country and gender, indicates that migration to Austria and other countries reached an all-time high last year.

For example, the number of people moving to Austria, which had never reached 8,000 before 2020, more than doubled to over 16,500 last year.

The number of Hungarians emigrating to Germany increased by 20% compared to 2022.

When people think of Europeans migrating abroad, they often imagine sunny destinations with Mediterranean beaches in Southern Europe. Indeed, countries such as Portugal and Spain remain very popular. Yet for my fellow Dutch countrymen, Hungary is increasingly becoming a preferred destination as well. This must be for different reasons, as Hungary — being landlocked — is hardly known for its beaches.
