Autumn is a great time of year to travel, after the full heat of summer, when more affordable prices are available. The rental car comparison company DiscoverCars.com has created a top 10 ranking to help holidaymakers decide where to take a trip, as temperatures drop a couple of degrees to something milder.
DiscoverCars.com drew up a list of 18 cities that are renowned for being tourist hotspots in the autumn season. The company assessed them based on a range of factors including the average cost to rent a vehicle for a week, the number of budget hotels, and the average amount of rainfall. The cities were given a score out of 144, which was used to create the ranking.
Budapest ranked in seventh place, with 76 out of 144 points.
Among other reasons, Hungary’s beautiful capital city earned its score with 687 affordable restaurants, a low cost to rent a car for a week (34509.21 Ft, or £73.80) and close proximity to Budapest airport.
Visitors are drawn to Budapest by the city’s magnificent architecture, as well as its culture and its history. On the banks of the river Danube, Budapest is a lovely place to explore thanks to destinations such as the Castle District. One attraction for which the city is most famous is the thermal baths, with many different hotels and spas offering an opportunity to relax and unwind in the water from the hot springs.
There are several festivals in the city in autumn. For instance, Budapest will be home to the fourth annual Liszt Fest International Cultural Festival this October.
Neighbouring countries Austria and Croatia appeared in the list too, with the Austrian capital of Vienna being a particularly nearby destination for Hungarians to visit. From Sopron, it is just over an hour’s drive away.
Aleksandrs Buraks at DiscoverCars.com comments:
“Any of these cities would be a wonderful holiday destination this autumn, whether you are looking for a city break somewhere with lots of interesting, historic streets to wander down, or hoping for long, warm days on the beach. It’s worth mentioning, of course, that all the coastal cities in our list offer both historic architecture and seaside fun so you don’t have to pick!
“The wonderful city of Budapest would be a great place to visit this autumn. As the weather cools, it becomes even nicer to explore the city on foot, as well as hike in the Buda Hills. You can go on an adventure in the caves beneath the hills, or stay closer to the city and soak up the local culture in the many museums and galleries.”
The number one destination was Marrakech, the fourth largest city in Morocco - it received a score of 108 out of 144.
In second place, Seville, in the Andalusian region of southern Spain, scored 104 out of 144.
Lisbon came in third place with a score of 98 out of 144.
Madrid came in fourth place. The Spanish capital scored 97 out of 144, only one point behind Lisbon.
The last destination in the top five is Barcelona, which scored 80 out of 144.
Completing the top ten, the remaining cities in order were; Venice, Budapest, Rome, Florence, and Bruges.
