'World's Biggest Bank Robbery' Committed in Hungary, Claims Magyar
Peter Magyar verbally abused staff in a telephone call to the MNB after the launch of an investigation into suspected insider trading by the head of the Tisza Party. Magyar has denied wrongdoing, calling the probe politically motivated and demanding the case be dropped.

In a Facebook post, Magyar criticised the MNB as 'the scene of the world's biggest bank robbery' and said the investigation has targeted him due to the upcoming elections.

The MNB stated that the politician made an angry call on April 22, objecting to questions and alleging political motives behind the inquiry. The bank emphasised its independence and condemned verbal abuse.

The inquiry concerns trades made before Opus Global's July 2023 share buyback. Magyar said he recently received a related questionnaire and mocked its content. He denied receiving insider information or profiting unlawfully.

Magyar also accused Prime Minister Viktor Orban of orchestrating efforts to discredit him, as he vowed to hold officials accountable for alleged corruption involving MNB funds. He claims that Ft 650 billion was stolen and spent on expensive properties abroad.

Magyar earlier sued Index for spreading rumours that he had engaged in insider trading.

Construction and Transport Minister Janos Lazar asserted that Magyar may have profited up to Ft 100 million using insider knowledge.

The Tisza Party rejected these claims as false, stating Magyar had no access to confidential information and committed no crime.
