Simicsko said they want to protect seniors and give them the freedom to choose whether to pay at a cashier or at a self-service checkout.
He noted that cashier positions had been abolished in more and more places, but the government and the governing Fidesz-KDNP parties have a very serious goal of expanding employment.
Details will be in a decree, and consumer protection authorities will check if stores are fulfilling their legal obligations, he added.
Simicsko said that in the long term the introduction of "priority tills" for elderly and mothers with small children could also be considered.
