DRS Success: Deposit-Return System in Hungary 'Exceeds Expectations'

Hungarians have readily embraced a deposit-return system (DRS) launched a year ago, the head of MOHU MOL, which has a nationwide municipal waste management concession, said in the latest Blue Planet podcast.

Zsolt Petho said Hungarians' acceptance of the system had "exceeded expectations". Four of five bottles and cans are returned at present, while the rate for PET bottle returns stands over 90pc, he added.

MOL MOHU has around 3,000 DRS machines that are operating over 95pc capacity. Manual returns are available at 1,700 points around the country.

Hungarians use the DRS to return 6-7 million bottles and cans a day, on average.

MOL MOHU, a unit of oil and gas company MOL, is ploughing HUF 200bn-250bn into waste management investments over the next ten years, Petho said.

Janos Ader, the former president of Hungary and the head of the board of trustees of the Blue Planet Foundation, noted that the country was required by European Union rules to boost its recycling rate for municipal waste to 65pc within ten years.
