Pilot Shopping Project: Tesco Launches First Premier Store in Hungary
Tesco has opened Hungary’s first Premier convenience store in Csepel, signalling a new direction for the retailer as it faces growing competition from discount chains such as Lidl.

The shop replaces a former Tesco Express, but the change represents more than just a new name — it’s a test of a different business model.

Premier is a well-established convenience store brand in the United Kingdom, operated under the Booker Group, which Tesco acquired in 2018. While Tesco Express outlets in Hungary are directly owned by the company and known for their smaller size and higher prices,

Premier stores in the UK usually run as franchises or independent shops supplied by Booker’s distribution system. They aim to provide an accessible, community-oriented shopping experience with everyday groceries, fresh produce, drinks, ready meals, and household items.

By launching Premier in Hungary, Tesco appears to be trialling a format that could better match urban and residential shopping patterns. The company may eventually open the door to franchising opportunities for local entrepreneurs — similar to how Spar and Coop already operate here.

The Csepel outlet is being treated as a pilot location, where Tesco is monitoring customer feedback and operational results. The shop continues to use Tesco’s logistics, IT systems, and supply chains, but the layout and product range have been adapted to local demand.

This move comes against a backdrop of regulatory pressures—such as retail taxes and government-imposed pricing rules—along with the growing dominance of discount retailers in Hungary’s urban centres.

Tesco says these challenges are driving investment in new formats to strengthen its network, improve value, and retain customer loyalty.

In addition to the Csepel store, a fully Tesco-operated Premier has also opened on Budapest’s Kossuth Lajos Street, where further innovations and operational models are being tested.

The results of these pilots will play a key role in shaping Tesco’s future strategy in Hungary’s highly competitive retail market.
