The team of the university's Department of Otorhinolaryngology, Head and Neck Surgery has implanted a smart cohclea into a four-year-old girl's ear, to replace a malfunctioning hearing aid.

"The operation was complex and challenging. Such operations are rare because, besides the anatomical environment of an earlier implant, the accurate placement of the electrode and the optimal stimulation of the hearing nerve also present a challenge," the statement said.

Clinic director Istvan Szanyi said the operation was a full success. "The smart implant will enable the patient to improve her hearing and to lead a fully life as an adult," he said.
