Africa Express – With Damon Albarn, Budapest Palace of Arts, 6 July
Damon Albarn returns to Budapest this July with something completely different after he previously performed here with Gorillaz, Blur, and The Good, The Bad & The Queen - the Africa Express, his boundary-pushing musical collective known for blending global styles in bold new ways.

According to a new press release tied to the upcoming Africa Express album – Africa Express presents… Bahidorá, dropping 11 July – the group has announced a run of live shows. Budapest is proudly on the list, with a performance slated for 6 July at Palace of Arts.

Founded in 2006 by Albarn and journalist Ian Birrell, Africa Express is all about collaboration across continents, uniting artists from Africa, Latin America, the Middle East, and the West in one high-energy, genre-defying experience. Their forthcoming record celebrates Mexico’s vibrant and diverse culture, promising an equally colourful live show.

The lineup is stacked: Fatoumata Diawara (who wowed audiences at this year’s Budapest Ritmo), Django Django, Bonobo, and Son Rompe Pera, whose cumbia-punk chaos lit up Sziget Festival a few years back, are all part of the mix.

Africa Express has delivered some legendary live moments – none more infamous than the five-hour, 4am blowout at Roskilde in 2015, where Albarn had to be physically removed from the stage. If even a hint of that magic hits Budapest, it’ll be a night to remember.
