Tobacco & Casino Concessions in Hungary to be Reviewed by New Gov't
The government has ordered a full review of tobacco concessions and a comprehensive review of casino concessions, David Vitezy, the minister of transport and investment, said at a regular press briefing on Thursday.

The minister said the review will affect all contracts, contractual relationships and the entire regulatory environment for tobacco concessions.

Vitezy recalled that for more than ten years now the state has created a monopoly by granting concession rights to supply tobacco shops to a Hodmezovasarhely-based company with a more than HUF 1,100bn turnover and large tobacco industry players.

The minister said these actors earn more than HUF 10bn in profits, so they are reviewing whether it is right for this to happen and what regulatory steps the government can take here to protect public funds and the public interest.

Regarding casino concessions, Vitezy said the previous government awarded a series of long-term concessions, some running until 2061, in the weeks before the elections.

The Finance Ministry has been tasked with reviewing the circumstances under which the concessions were awarded, and if the way in which the previous government handled the right to operate casinos was correct.
