Era of 'Anti-Budapest Politics' Coming to an End?
The era of "anti-Budapest politics" is coming to an end, Mayor Gergely Karacsony said on Facebook on Tuesday, expressing hope that a new agreement between the capital and the government would be reached this autumn.

The mayor said that the Kuria, Hungary's supreme court, has ruled in Budapest’s favour in a case against Budapest government commissioner Botond Sara, who wanted to prove that the city’s budget was unlawful. The Kuria, however, ruled that it is lawful and economically sound, he added.

Karacsony said it was also a welcome development that parliament on Tuesday repealed one of the Orban government’s "most despicable attempts to bleed Budapest dry" with the help of "the euphemistically named ‘relief loan’ scheme".

Karacsony described it as a "legal monstrosity" and "a clear-cut case of usury" that would have involved "returning money taken from Budapest as a loan".

The mayor said that "Budapest did not bow to the Orban government" and "through a series of legal and political battles, it defended the city’s values, principles and ability to function." "This is where we begin as we turn the page to a new chapter," he added.

"We understand that we must wait for the August review of the state budget, but I believe and hope that a new agreement between Budapest and the government can be reached this autumn, one that will consign the Orban government's latest destructive legacy, its anti-Budapest policies, and its disregard for municipal autonomy, to the dustbin of history," he said.
