Xpat Interview:

1. Where did you grow up?
Gyöngyös, until I was 18, since than I’ve been living in Budapest.

2. If you could be an expat anywhere in the world, where would you choose?
Not easy to chose one as I love a few. Istanbul would be an ‘Eastern’ favourite. and Amsterdam a ‘Western’ one.

3. What would you miss most if you moved away from Hungary?
Friends, as my closed family would come with me. Other things can be replaced or reached somehow, like food, publications and art, so I would miss personal contacts.

4. Friends are in Budapest for a weekend - what must they absolutely see and do?
To enjoy everyday life in Budapest, so I would suggest not to be a ‘tourist’, or just be a tourist for a couple of hours - see 5 highlights and then go to local cafés, exhibitions, restaurants..e.g. Petrus, a cosy French style dining experience, well worth a visit in the 9th district.

5. What is your favourite food?
Lecsó - spicy style, with egg rather than sausage.

6. What is your favourite sport / form of exercise?
Running and cycling in the summer. I’ve completed a few Half-Marathons although mainly I just run for fun and fitness.

7. What is your favourite place in Hungary?
I really like hiking in the Mátra hills, and also around like Lake Balaton, especially the southern shore since it reminds me of my childhood.

8. What career other than yours would you love to pursue?
I would love to be a professor, and conduct lectures to transfer my knowledge about business, finance and marketing.

9. What’s a job you would definitely never want?
Anything in Politics

10. Where did you spend your last vacation?
At Lake Balaton, twice last year, at Siófok and then Balatonfüred.

11. Where do you hope to spend your next one?
Istria, Croatia, that’s another favourite of mine. Or at Lake Tisza, where the natural wild life is fantastic. There are great cycling opportunities there, and a good wellness hotel. Boat trips can also be taken there which are very special on this ‘low-lands’ lake.

12. What was your favourite band, film, or hobby as a teen?
The Rolling Stones were my first rock music experience, and I saw Metallica in concert several times in Budapest. The Star Wars films, parts 4-5-6, the original ones! I played a lot of sports, handball for example.

13. Apart of temptation what can’t you resist?
Fine food, I love taking culinary adventures!

14. Red wine or white?
In Austria I would choose white, in Italy red, in Hungary I can say both!

15. Book or movie?
I wish I had time to read books, but these days I watch movies from time to time. However I must say I prefer reading books to watching a film.

16. Morning person or night person?
Night.

17. Which social issue do you feel most strongly about?
In Hungary, this Region, and generally in Europe, during the crisis people became more ‘introverted’ – meaning they turned inwards somewhat, perhaps trying to protect themselves and maybe their close family. This defensive attitude slows down the recovery, and I believe a cooperative approach would be more helpful and productive.

18. Buda or Pest side?
Danube – meaning Budapest, I cannot separate the city.

19. Which achievement in your life are you most pleased about?
My kids, currently a 1 year old girl and a 4.5 years old son.

20. What would you say is your personal motto?
„Do or do not. There is no try.”
