“Over the past 1100 years, Hungarians have experienced much more serious crises than the current one, but emerged victorious from every one of them”, Minister of Human Capacities Miklós Kásler emphasised at a ceremony in Budapest on Tuesday to present state awards to mark the 20 August national holiday, and awards postponed from the 15 March memorial day of the 1848 revolution.

Due to the severe weather conditions Interior Ministry suggested to cancel all outdoor events on 15 March. The indoor celebrations are not affected.
Hundreds Of Thousands Celebrated The Anniversary Of The Foundation Of The State In Budapest

In the evening of 20 August, the day that marks the anniversary of the foundation of the Hungarian State, more than half a million people watched the ceremonial fireworks display held on the Danube Banks. The ceremonial events attracted much attention and were held in high spirits; thousands of tourists were able to share the festive atmosphere of one of Hungary’s greatest national holidays.

The celebrations will begin on August 19 when the 'Street of Hungarian Flavours' will open at noon between the Buda side of the Erzsébet híd and Bem tér. Awards will be presented for Hungary’s best cake, sugar-free cake and ice cream. Pop music will play on Clark Ádám tér and on Bem tér from 8pm.
