International Military Exercise Starts In W Hungary

An international military exercise dubbed Várpalota Challenge 2016 started in western Hungary on Monday and will run for over a month, the defence ministry said. The exercise, commanded by Dutch officers and ending on February 21, will give Hungarian troops an opportunity to practise tasks that are part of international support for NATO forces.

The Hungarian Special Force (officially MH 34. Bercsényi László Különleges Műveleti Zászlóalj/ HDF 34th ’László Bercsényi’ Special Operations Battalion) serves as Hungary’s special unit. Originally, it was formed on 1 October 1939 under the name of Hungarian Defence Parachute Battalion (Honvéd Ejtőernyős Zászlóalj), but the operation was suspended in 1954.

Colonel Kovats, a native of Karcag, recruited, trained and led the first U.S. cavalry unit into battle and died on May 11, 1779, in a cavalry charge against British troops outside of Charleston, South Carolina.
