Smart Cameras Now Monitoring Cars In Hungary

A network of cameras installed on major roads throughout Hungary recorded nearly 100 traffic violations in its first two hours after it became operational at 8 am this Tuesday. Traffic fines are Ft 50,000 for driving through a red light, Ft 30,000 for illegal overtaking or U-turns, and Ft 300,000 for exceeding the speed limit by Ft 75km per hour.

The national tax authority (NAV) has purchased a drone to detect and monitor routes of cigarette smuggling, daily Magyar Idők said, citing a NAV spokesperson. The aircraft, bought at a cost of 20 million forints (EUR 65,000) in European Union funding, completes a range of special equipment such as night vision devices, thermal cameras as well as a hovercraft to control riverways.

The first two Siemens Combino trams equipped with CCTV cameras, began running along the 4-6 line in Budapest on Tuesday. The so-called Futár passenger information system has also been installed on board. All of the city’s Combino trams will soon be similarly equipped in hopes of preventing violence.
