Katinka Hosszú, Hungary’s most successful swimmer of recent years, criticised the Hungarian Swimming Federation yesterday, accusing its leaders of complacency rather than stepping up efforts to help the nation’s swimmers. The world and European swimming champion, holder of several world records, told a Budapest press conference that she did not expect and did not receive additional resources from the federation before she won medals at major competitions.

However, she was surprised when no such assistance was provided after she started winning world championships in 2013, despite numerous meetings and requests.

Instead, Hosszú said, she was told that she could have them “on the condition that I lend my image and brand to the organisational committee for the 2017 FINA World Championships to be held in Budapest”.

In response, Swimming Federation president Tamás Gyárfás said “if Katinka has any reasonable proposals, we must take them seriously and it is our duty to help if we can”.

As an example of requested resources provided, Gyárfás said that when Hosszú had asked for a Ft 3 million digital video camera to analyse her swimming style, the Federation ordered 20 cameras from the Netherlands for herself, as well as swimmers Daniel Gyurta, László Cseh and others.
