Retail sales in Hungary rose by an annual 3.5 percent in April, accelerating from a 3.3 percent increase in the previous month, the Central Statistical Office (KSH) said on Tuesday. Adjusted for calendar year effects — notably the impact of the Easter holiday — retail sales increased by 2 percent, slowing from a 5.3 percent rise in the previous month.

Hungary has a shortage of student workers, according to Balázs Simon, head of the student work lobby group Diákész. The supply is smaller because the number of higher education students has dropped from 470,000 in 2007 to 290,000 at present, he added.

Reindustrialisation in Hungary will shift up a gear in 2017, Prime Minister Viktor Orbán said at the inauguration of Samsung SDI’s electric car battery plant in the town of Göd, north of Budapest, on Monday. Hungary’s auto industry employed over 160,000 in the first quarter of the year, Orbán said, arguing that this had allowed Hungary to become a hub for car production in central Europe.
