Renewed 'Moonlight Gorge' Hiking Trail in Hungary Officially Unveiled
Pilisi Parkerdő Zrt. has completed the conservation and ecotourism renovation of the Holdvilág Gorge, ensuring that one of Hungary’s most visited ravines can now welcome hikers more safely while offering them an even richer experience. This was announced at the ceremonial opening of the restored trail on Wednesday.

At the event near Pomáz on October 1, 2025, Gábor Reinitz, CEO of Pilisi Parkerdő, explained that in order to guarantee the safety of visitors, foresters restored 275 steps, built 11 new fords using local materials, created three debris barriers to protect the streams, installed new information boards, benches, and fire pits, and erected handrails on the steepest sections of the route.

Péter Zambó, State Secretary responsible for forests and land affairs, emphasized that this development represents a model of good practice, demonstrating how the protection of nature, the advancement of tourism, and the creation of community value can be pursued together.

He recalled that his own professional career began at Pilisi Parkerdő and that back in 1989 significant resources were invested in restoring the Holdvilág Gorge. However, no major renovation had taken place since then.

The present development, he added, preserves the wild character of the site while at the same time making its wonders easier to experience.

György Bacsa, a member of the board of trustees of the MOL-New Europe Foundation, highlighted that partnerships between private and public actors are capable of creating sustainable solutions that place the protection of natural treasures at the service of future generations.

The works carried out with the support of the MOL-New Europe Foundation follow on from the spring renovation of the Barátkút rest area, where visitors have already been able to enjoy new benches, information panels, and an orderly recreation spot.

The Holdvilág Gorge, situated at the eastern gateway to the Pilis Mountains near Pomáz, has for decades attracted hikers with its striking geological formations, rock walls, and diverse wildlife.

The most famous point of the gorge is a ten-metre-high rock face, which can be climbed with the help of the Meteor Ladder, an iconic structure erected in 1965.

Pilisi Parkerdő Zrt. currently manages 65,000 hectares of forest around Budapest, welcoming around 30 million visitors each year.

Owing to its proximity to the capital, these forests serve not only as sites of conservation but also as destinations for recreation and sport.

The demand for hiking grew even further during the pandemic years; for instance, the lookout tower on Prédikálószék alone recorded 15–17,000 visitors over a single weekend.
