It is “almost certain” that Jewish federation Mazsihisz will stay away from the April 16 start of government programmes of the Holocaust Memorial Year, Mazsihisz leader András Heisler told Wednesday’s Népszabadság. The federation, however, may be represented in local government events, he said in an interview.

Gábor Czene of Népszabadság conducted an interview with Tamás Fabiny, bishop of the northern district of the Hungarian Lutheran Church. Fabiny was ordained in Erlangen, Germany in 1982. He also studied in the United States. In addition to his church activities he worked for Duna TV. Since 2010 he has been the vice chairman of the Lutheran World Federation.

Bells chimed in Budapest Wednesday evening to mark the election of a new pope at the Vatican to succeed Benedict XVI. The Conference of Catholic Bishops said it had been ordered that bells be sounded in the Esztergom-Budapest Diocese upon the election of the new pontiff.
