Bells Chime In Hungary As New Pope Is Elected

Bells chimed in Budapest Wednesday evening to mark the election of a new pope at the Vatican to succeed Benedict XVI. The Conference of Catholic Bishops said it had been ordered that bells be sounded in the Esztergom-Budapest Diocese upon the election of the new pontiff.
Hungary’s Cardinal Peter Erdo had been considered a contender, but the conclave elected a South American to the papacy for the first time.
Argentinean Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio, 76, chose as his papal name Francis I.
