Budapest Jewish Summer Festival With Focus On Holocaust 70th Anniversary

This year’s Jewish Summer Festival held until Sept. 7 features music, literature, theatre, film and fine art, with a focus on the 70th anniversary of the Holocaust. Some 30 productions with more than 500 contributors at more than ten venues are featured in the week-long festival. In addition to Budapest, events are held in Gyöngyös, Pécs and Veszprém.

Iván Fischer's opera "The Red Heifer" will be performed at 8:00 p.m. on Monday, June 23rd and Tuesday, June 24th at the Vígszínház in Budapest. This powerful opera has be praised internationally. It is the story of a true drama of a blood libel case that took place in Hungary in the late nineteenth century.
An Evening Of Richard Strauss, Liszt Academy Budapest, 4 April

Richard Strauss was born 150 years ago, in 1864. For many, he is a creator of operas, the composer of Salome, Elektra, Der Rosenkavalier, and The Woman without a Shadow. For others, his name signifies symphonic poems such as A Hero’s Life, Till Eulenspiegel and Zarathustra. He was also responsible for great lieder, like the incomparable Four Lasts Songs.

Bela Bartok’s Sonatas for Violin and Sonata for Violin on audio CD has won the prestigious international Gramophone Award. Zoltan Kocsis (laureate of the Hungarian Kossuth Prize twice) plays the piano and Barnabas Kelemen (Kossuth Prize laureate) plays the piano. Kelemen received the Gramophone Award in London in September.

Ivan Fischer, Music Director of the Budapest Festival Orchestra and the Konzerthaus Berlin, was awarded with an Honorary Membership of the Royal Academy of Music. The Honorary Membership is limited to 300 persons; Mendelssohn, Liszt, Stravinsky and Casals are amongst those who received this honour.
