The first thing to say about the Hungaroring, is that it can be phenomenally dull; at least it could be up until last year. For most of its 25+ year history on the F1 calendar, the tight and twisting bowl-shaped track on the outskirts of Budapest came with the reputation of regularly hosting complete snoozefests. I’ve long been a supporter of British lifesavers. Ever since I briefly was a lifesaver myself as a student holiday job. And recently I’ve become a trustee of the Lifeboat Fund in the UK. So I’ve been looking for a chance to pick up that cause now that I’m here in Hungary. I’m very pleased to say I’ve found it.

A decision by the International Olympic Committee’s executive committee to remove wrestling from the list of core Olympic sports has caused shock in Hungary. Hungarian Wrestling Federation president Tamás Gáspár called the move a bolt of lightning out of the blue “I simply cannot understand it. I thought wrestling had a stable place in the Olympic programme”.
