When it comes to giving, it is said that it is better to give than to receive. This is exactly what the NAWA have been doing a lot of recently. I went along to two events that they were hosting. The first was in a long line of events called “Adopt a Granny” and the other was a gift exchange.

The Hungarian State Folk Ensemble is touring the United States; there will be a concert to help elderly musicians who are stewards of traditions; a new full-size program featuring dances from Sub-Carpathia will be compiled; and decision has been made to expand the Museum of Applied Folk Art. We have interviewed László Kelemen, director-general of the Hungarian Heritage House in Budapest.

The name "Budapest" is the composition of the city names "Buda" and "Pest", since they were united (together with Óbuda) to become a single city in 1873. One of the first occurrences of the combined name "Buda-Pest" was in 1831 in the book "Világ" ("World" / "Light"), written by Count István Széchenyi.

This is a civil society. The civility of Hungarians is one of the first characteristics that impressed me. Pass any Hungarian in an enclosed space – a stairwell or a lift – and you'll receive a greeting 'Good day'. Enter any small shop and you'll receive the same greeting from the shopkeeper, plus 'How can I help you?' and on leaving 'Goodbye'. Travel on a tram and you'll soon witness a teenager ...

Applause comes in different forms. There’s the quiet golfer clap that bystanders use so as not to disturb the golfers; the string player clap that musicians make when tapping their bows on the music stands; the airline clap made by grateful passengers when the airplane lands. There’s a teacher clap, too.
