The 25th anniversary of the first heart transplant operation was marked in Budapest on Tuesday. Béla Merkely, vice rector of Budapest’s Semmelweis Medical University, said in his address that the anniversary “gives hope to patients waiting for a new heart and ensures recognition to people working to produce similar achievements”.

Women living in western Hungary and in cities have longer life expectancy than others, with Budapest females born last year expected to live until the age of 81, daily Magyar Idők said, citing data from the Central Statistical Office.
