Parliament on Friday rejected an amendment motion under which a congestion fee could be collected from drivers in Budapest. The motion was submitted by two deputy mayors who are also MPs, of whom Gábor Bagdy abstained from voting while István György voted against his own proposal. It was soundly rejected by 305 votes to 14.

The introduction of a congestion fee by the summer of 2013 may seem early, but it is unavoidable to raise funds for the financing of the Budapest transport company BKV, Budapest mayor István Tarlós said yesterday. The European Union set the congestion fee as a precondition for subsidising metro line number four, and it was accepted by the previous city leadership, Tarlós said last week.
