New Vignettes & Improved Roads Await Drivers in Hungary
Early sales for Hungary’s 2026 e-vignettes are already underway, with a notable new addition to the toll system: the M1 Regional Vignette. Designed to mitigate the impact of upcoming expansion works on the M1 motorway, this specialized pass has already seen significant interest, with 1,500 units sold in its first week.

The New M1 Authorization

Introduced by the National Road Toll Payment Services (NÚSZ) as a concession for commuters facing expected delays, the M1 vignette offers a cost-effective alternative for frequent travelers.

Unlike standard county stickers, this single authorization covers the entire toll network across four counties: Pest, Fejér, Komárom-Esztergom, and Győr-Moson-Sopron. It is available to all drivers, regardless of their place of residence.

Tamás Bartal, CEO of NÚSZ, urges drivers to calculate their routes carefully before purchasing. Since county vignettes cannot be refunded once their validity period begins, it is worth checking if this multi-county M1 pass is a more economical choice than buying individual county stickers.

Purchase Precautions

When buying in advance via the official nemzetiutdij.hu portal, NÚSZ advises extra vigilance.

Ensure that the 2026 validity year is explicitly selected. Once a transaction is finalized, the system does not allow for the correction of vehicle data or the year of validity. Before proceeding to payment, double-check your license plate number, country code, and vehicle category (e.g., D1 for standard passenger cars).

Major Renovations Conclude

In addition to the new toll options, expressway operator MKIF has announced the completion of the largest road renovation project in Hungary’s history. Since March 2023, roughly 70% of the managed network — totaling 1,300 km — has been renewed.

The 2025 season alone saw 4.5 million square meters of asphalt laid, alongside the modernization of 315 bridges and 68 rest areas. While routine maintenance will continue in 2026, the era of massive, disruptive construction sites is largely over, promising a smoother driving experience for the year ahead.
