European Guests Still Driving Force Of Hungary Tourism

Although the number of guest nights spent by Chinese and Indian tourists in Hungary is on the rise, European guests remain the driving force of Hungary’s tourism sector, the head of the Association of Hungarian Hotels and Restaurants said. Ákos Niklai told public news channel M1 that around 80% of Hungary’s tourists come from European countries.

The event this year is expected to draw 10% more visitors than in 2014, most of them coming from abroad, the paper said. The number of guest nights spent in Hungarian hotels and guesthouses went up by an annual 3.8% to 2,247,000 in May, the Central Statistical Office (KSH) said. Tourism has proven successful as one of the driving forces of the national economy: between 1 January and 31 May, 3.4 million tourists spent a total of 7.9 million guest nights at commercial accommodation establishments.

Budapest Airport registered an annual 10.8% increase in traffic last month, with 840,486 passengers arriving and departing from the facility, an all-time high for the month of April.
