A Syrian man was sentenced to 10 years imprisonment for his role in a migrant riot at the Röszke border crossing station last autumn. In its primary ruling passed on Wednesday, the Szeged court said that the man was guilty of terrorist activities involving illegal border crossing as well as coercion and violence, committed as a participant in the riot.

Parliament approved on Tuesday the government’s so-called autumn tax package targeting reducing the public burden, boosting competitiveness and streamlining the tax bureaucracy. The revenue limit applied to itemised tax for small business taxpayers will be raised, the exemption threshold for VAT will be similarly raised, while rules for health-care contributions will be simplified.

Parliament on Tuesday passed a government bill to introduce stricter rules on the use of unregistered SIM cards. Under the new law, subscription for pre-paid mobile phone services cannot be passed onto a third party without informing the service provider. Service providers must also check the identity of prospective customers before signing a contract.

The deal with China on upgrading the Budapest-Belgrade rail line was signed on Saturday during a China-CEE summit in Riga, Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó told journalists. Hungary and China have reached “a new milestone” in ties, he said, adding that Hungary had always shown commitment to furthering cooperation between central and eastern Europe and China.
