Why Komárom Matters More Than Ever to Hungarian Economy
- 10 Feb 2026 12:03 PM
Speaking at a forum of the city’s largest taxpayers on Monday, Szijjártó said Komárom had undergone a major shift over the past decade, driven by large-scale industrial investment and state-backed development programmes.
He described the town, located on the Slovak border along the Danube, as an increasingly important pillar of the Hungarian economy.
According to the minister, the government has supported 27 major corporate investments in Komárom since 2014, contributing a total of HUF 51 billion to projects worth HUF 580 billion overall. These developments have resulted in the creation of around 4,800 jobs, significantly reshaping the local labour market.
Szijjártó said Komárom is now home to a diverse range of industries, including a leading pharmaceutical manufacturer, one of the world’s largest battery producers, and suppliers to the automotive sector.
The city also hosts an IT company focused on artificial intelligence, alongside businesses in printing, agribusiness, food production and electric bus manufacturing.
Komárom’s strategic location near the Slovak border, strong transport links and growing industrial infrastructure have made it an attractive destination for international investors in recent years.
The city forms part of a wider cross-border economic zone, with close ties to Komárno in Slovakia, and has benefited from Hungary’s broader push to expand manufacturing capacity, particularly in high-value sectors such as pharmaceuticals, electric vehicles and battery production.
For expats living or working in north-west Hungary, the city’s rapid development has brought both new employment opportunities and increased international presence, while also contributing to wider debates about industrial growth, workforce demand and long-term regional sustainability.
