Gáspár Bálint, Managing Director of Vitéz Kürtös (Company Behind Chimney Cake Festival in Budapest)
He was born in 1976 in Székelyudvarhely (Odorheiu Secuiesc) in Transylvania, and he studied fine mechanical engineering at the Technical University of Cluj-Napoca, graduating in 1999. He comes from a family with deep roots in the making of traditional Transylvanian chimney cake (kürtőskalács) — his grandmother, Irma Simó, used to bake and sell kürtőskalács and kürtősfánk at open pools and spas on weekends.

Inspired by this family tradition, Gáspár and his partner Tünde András founded the business that would become Vitéz Kürtős, initially travelling from festival to festival with their baked goods before opening permanent shops.

In 2004, he established his Hungarian company, and over the years, the Vitéz Kürtős brand has grown into a nationally recognised name for authentic, charcoal-roasted chimney cakes, with the trademark “Vitéz Kürtős Anno 2003” now registered across the EU.

A key part of his ethos is preserving tradition — the original recipe is the one passed down from his grandmother, and the cakes are still roasted on beech-wood charcoal rather than electric or gas heating.

Beyond the kitchen, Gáspár is also a dedicated sportsman and traveller, having taken part in charity adventure events such as the Saharun off-road rally, while promoting Transylvanian pastry and culture through various sporting and community activities.

Under his leadership, Vitéz Kürtős has expanded beyond the classic chimney cake, offering gluten-free and dairy-free varieties, freeze-dried fruit flavours, and even home-use roasters and accessories through the “Vitéz Gastro” sub-brand.

For Gáspár, the mission has always been about more than selling a pastry — it’s about sharing a cherished heritage and making the kürtőskalács known and loved around the world, elevating it from a regional specialty to a true symbol of Hungarian and Transylvanian tradition.

1. When did you arrive in Hungary and what brought you here?

I moved to Budapest in 2007. Our business in Transylvania was to sell Kürtőskalács (chimney cake) at festivals across Romania, but we got got more and more invitations to Hungary from sister cities and friends who wanted to have an authentic Kürtőskalács vendor at their events.

In the first five years we commuted almost every weekend between the two countries, but in 2007 we decided to close our business in Romania and build our brand, Vitéz Kürtős, here in Hungary.

2. Have you ever been an expatriate elsewhere?

In 2013 I was on an exchange program for 6 months in Frankfurt. There were a lot of events organised for expats, and I attended most of them. Coming home to Budapest I started visiting the same events, I already considered myself an expat. I felt really good in a multicultural environment.

3. What surprised you most about Hungary?

Most of the people were very friendly, standing politely in the queue while they waited for their Kürtőskalács to be baked. And they thanked us for being there. That was really heart warming.

4. Friends are in Budapest for the weekend - what must they absolutely see and do?

Visit our favourite bars and restaurants. Mostly the same for years.
