Anti-corruption protests took place across Hungary today. In Budapest the demonstration started in front of the Eiffel Palace Office Building near the Nyugati (western) train station. A few minutes before the scheduled start of the protest it seemed as though police and members of the press would outnumber the protesters.

Cash bonuses for doctors and nurses have been standard practice for the past sixty years in Hungary and were tacitly tolerated as the only way to compensate for the low salaries prevalent in the Health Service. The new Penal Code however, defined such payments as a breach of the law, but the Ministry of Human Resources empowered hospital managements to authorise the receipt of such payments.

A record of almost two million passengers departed from Budapest Airport’s terminals in the first three months of the year, with London being the most popular destination. The increase of traffic had accelerated at Budapest’s Liszt Ferenc International Airport despite January, February and March traditionally being the weakest months of the year.

In Ág, a small village in the southern Hungarian Baranya county, the locals washed themselves in wash tubs. Last year Habitat for Humanity appeared and offered building material for volunteer work.

The government will offer a Ft 4.5 billion subsidy to save the clothing manufacturer Styl Ruhagyár in Szombathely, Vas County, Napi Gazdaság reports, citing the agenda of the city council, which will vote on the matter on Thursday. The court ordered the liquidation of the company in 2005 after it failed to pay a $6,000 invoice.
