Hungary plans to pay back its IMF loan early and called on the fund to shut its Budapest office in what could be a symbolic move by Prime Minister Viktor Orbán’s government to display its economic sovereignty. Hungary's ability to avoid the austerity programmes faced by many of its European neighbours will be the government's main selling point when it bids for re-election next year.

The European Commission has withdrawn its appeal before the European Court of Justice against Hungary and Spain regarding special taxes on the telecoms sector, it was announced yesterday. This week I visited the Humana second hand shop on Szent István boulevard, between Jászai Mari square and Nyugati railway station. I’ve heard a lot about this one, so I decided to give it a go. You can spot it from quite the distance, thanks to its yellow signs. The shop window gave a promising look, so I’ve entered with high hopes and immediate disappointment followed.
