With the famous German words, “Oh zapft’s ...” which come from a popular German song, the yearly Octoberfest in Munich is always started. Today it is the worlds largest 'folk-festival' in the world with more than 6 million visitors yearly. These facts motivated other cities like Paris, Sydney and Edinburgh to run their own ‘Octoberfests’, and this year it took place in Budapest for the first time.

The “Kürtőskalács” originates from Transylvania (Erdély) historical region, which is used to be part of Hungary. The 'National Cheese Contest of European Nations' was organised for the first time in Hungary by SZEGA Foods, in their new ‘Covent Garden’ style delicatessen, in the basement area of Budagyöngye shopping mall. Guests could subsequently taste the cheeses during the wine festival too.

I was intrigued to find out exactly what street food was on offer this weekend, in downtown Pest, at the historic Hold Street covered market hall. To my surprise, so were many more, who gravitated to this very popular occasion. Held in the elevated part of the market, you could meander around and take your pick at the many different foods and drinks on offer.

On a lovely sunny afternoon in Buda, we went along to the Rosalia Rosé wine festival. In “Gesztenyés kert” and on the terrace of the chic Larus Restaurant, a wide variety of wines, red, white and especially rosés, was waiting for wine-lovers. They ranged from “natural”, ice, bio to more quality mainstream.
