Throughout most of the 20th century, neon lights were the sign of progress and modernity – and behind the Iron Curtain, the illusion of it. Japan’s Tomoki Sakata won the 14th Ferenc Liszt International Piano Competition at the Budapest Academy of Music. Russian pianist Sergei Beliavsky won the second prize and the audience’s award, while the third prize went to Germany’s Leon Bernsdorf. Krisztián Kocsis, the only Hungarian competitor, was given the human resources ministry’s special prize.
