Tomoki Sakata Wins Ferenc Liszt Piano Competition In Budapest

Japan’s Tomoki Sakata won the 14th Ferenc Liszt International Piano Competition at the Budapest Academy of Music. Russian pianist Sergei Beliavsky won the second prize and the audience’s award, while the third prize went to Germany’s Leon Bernsdorf. Krisztián Kocsis, the only Hungarian competitor, was given the human resources ministry’s special prize.
The event marked the 205th anniversary of the great composer’s birth and the 130th anniversary of his death. Thirty-six pianists from 11 countries on three continents participated in the contest.
The honorary president of the jury was Hungarian composer and pianist György Kurtág.
The jury was presided by Kun Woo Paik of the Republic of Korea. János Áder, Hungary’s president was chief patron of the event.
