Hungary will open a defence attaché office in Zagreb later this year and in Bratislava, Prague and Skopje in 2017 as a way of boosting its military diplomacy, the defence minister announced. Addressing an annual meeting of defence attachés in Budapest, István Simicskó said Europe’s security environment had changed considerably in recent years.

Socialist MEP Tibor Szanyi has filed a complaint to the Constitutional Court over the Hungarian supreme court’s decision to greenlight the government-initiated referendum on the European Union’s mandatory migrant quota plan. Szanyi said the referendum “severely violates” the EU’s sovereignty, as the bloc’s 2007 Lisbon Treaty declares asylum policy a common policy.

The families of the four military explosives experts who were killed when a post-WW2 Soviet bomb exploded on a former bombing range in eastern Hungary on Friday are expected to receive one-off payments of over 10 million forints (EUR 31,560) each in addition to other compensation, daily Magyar Idők reports.
