Budapest Wins Global Smart Green City Award for its Environmental Strategy
Budapest has received the Global Smart Green City Award in recognition of its forward-looking environmental and climate strategy, the Mayor’s Office announced.

The award was presented in Geneva by the Global Forum on Human Settlements (GFHS), a leading international organisation focused on sustainable urban development that operates with special consultative status under the UN Economic and Social Council.

This distinction places Budapest among a select group of European capitals — previously, only Vienna and Dublin had received the same honour. It also marks the first time a Central or Eastern European city has earned this recognition.

The award highlights Budapest’s comprehensive Climate and Environmental Protection Strategy, created by the city’s dedicated department.

The plan focuses on ensuring a healthy, safe urban environment, conserving natural assets, and improving the efficiency of local resources. It also includes the city’s Sustainable Energy and Climate Action Plan, which aims to cut greenhouse gas emissions while increasing energy efficiency and the use of renewables.

Another key factor in Budapest’s success was its Smart Budapest Framework Strategy, which uses data-driven decision-making and intelligent technologies to support sustainable city management.

In a video message from Geneva, Mayor Gergely Karácsony said the award encourages Budapest to keep preparing for the impacts of climate change while continuing to make the city greener and more liveable for its residents.
