Hungary’s National Tax and Customs Authority (NAV) is stepping up its efforts to collect back taxes, daily Magyar Idők said. NAV will send more of its staff to collect in person than earlier, deputy state secretary for excise tax matters Tamás Molnár told the paper.

Hungarian porcelain maker Zsolnay Porcelánmanufaktúra has reacted angrily to a government decree which declared the company of “elevated strategic importance” as defined by the bankruptcy act. They said the company is neither insolvent nor bankrupt, adding that they traced signs of “an intent for a hostile takeover” in recent weeks.

The Media Council has definitively rejected a complaint from against ATV’s description of it in a newscast as a “far right” party. In its ruling, the Council did not say that it is fair to refer to Jobbik as an extremist party; rather it said the term “far right” in Hungary is not applied only to extremist, racist tendencies, but to right-wing parties advocating milder views.

Kecskemét prosecutors will put on trial in a fast track procedure 15 refugees who were involved in a disturbance at a detention centre in Kiskunhalas on January 15. The incident started when two Iraqis began fighting over access to the internet and armed security guards moved to separate them. One of the men then began to scuffle with arriving police.
