Infringement Procedure Over Media Freedom in Hungary Launched by Brussels
It is "unbelievable" that Brussels is launching another infringement procedure against Hungary, this time concerning media freedom, Zoltán Kovács, the state secretary for international communication and relations, said in a post on Facebook.

Meanwhile, in Ukraine opposition deputies are imprisoned, opposition media are censored or banned, and "the Brussels-Ukrainian mafia is embezzling billions in European taxpayers' money," he said.

"If Brussels spent just half as much time working to achieve peace, to defend against migration and to revive the European economy as they spend on attacks against Hungary ... Europe would not be on the verge of war and destruction," Kovacs said.

Meanwhile, EC steps up infringement procedures against Hungary over markup caps

The European Commission on Thursday issued reasoned opinions to Hungary regarding mandatory markup caps on a range of food and non-food products the government introduced to counter inflation, bringing infringement procedures to the next level.

The EC said the price margin restrictions were "contrary to the single market".

The EC launched the infringement procedures in June with a letter of formal notice. After the issue of the reasoned opinions, Hungary has two months to respond or the EC could refer the case to the Court of Justice of the EU.

In a statement issued after the EC announced the step, the National Economy Ministry said Brussels was "taking the side of multinationals". It added that the markup caps had slowed the "unjustified price increases of multinationals" and brought down the prices of affected food products by 20-24pc and of non-food products by over 27pc, on average.

The government measures were recently extended until February 28, while another 13 product categories were added to their scope, "because that is what serves the interests of Hungarian families", the ministry said.
