The decisions made by the President of Hungary on granting pardons to criminals may not be made public, the Capital Court ruled on Tuesday. The lawsuit had been initiated by a journalist with Origo website after the President’s Office refused to release related documents. The binding ruling overturns one which stated that such decisions should be made public.

A Hungarian man has become the first person to be convicted of people-smuggling in Northern Ireland. The 38-year-old was sentenced to 18 months in prison, of which he must serve five months, as he has been in detention for more than a year.

All Fidesz and Christian Democrat MPs signed the form to nominate Fidesz MEP János Áder to the post of head of state, which was officially submitted yesterday. The lone exception was Regional Development Minister Sándor Fazekas, who is abroad. Other nominations are possible by 8 a.m. Friday, but none are expected. Parliament will elect the new president at 10 a.m. on May 2.

The EU's competition office has approved Auchan's takeover of the seven Cora hypermarket units in Hungary. The Commission found that the transaction does not significantly hinder competition as Auchan will face strong rivalry after the merger from several other competitors.
Man Survives Metro Accident In Budapest

A man was knocked down by a metro carriage at Nyugati station on Monday evening but survived, BKV announced. The man fell in front of the train for hitherto unknown reasons. Shuttle buses carried passengers between Deák tér and Lehel tér until subway traffic returned to normal.

Most such contracts have been signed in western Hungary over the past 20 years, often disguised as rental agreements.
