UN Finds Fault With Treatment Of Asylum Seekers In Hungary
The Hungarian refugee system is not functioning in accordance with international norms, and urgent measures are needed to correct that, the UN High Commission for Refugees announced yesterday. The office’s Central European representative Gotffried Köhner told a Budapest press conference that Hungarian authorities wrongfully keep political asylum seekers in detention with illegal migrants.

Asylum seekers in Hungary are kept in detention without explanation and are often exposed to severe injuries from guards, a UN report stated.

Köhner said asylum seekers are treated like criminals, as for instance they can go to the post office, church or court only if escorted by guards.

Detainees have filed a tremendous number of complaints and appeals, the UNHCR stated.

Asylum seekers should be able to submit their applications without being intimidated or treated as criminals, Köhner pointed out.

Immigration and Citizenship Office director Zsuzsanna Végh said in response that the Hungarian refugee system fully complies with EU norms, both as regards regulations and accommodation.
