Retail sales in Hungary climbed by 5.7 percent in June from the same month a year earlier, preliminary data released by the Central Statistical Office (KSH) on Wednesday show. Retail sales also rose by 5.7 percent year on year when adjusted for calendar year effects. The pace slowed from an unadjusted 6.8 percent and was unchanged from a calendar-year-adjusted 5.7 percent rise in May.

Hungary’s construction sector output decreased by an annual 26.6% in May, falling sharply for the fifth month in a row, data released by the Central Statistical Office (KSH) on Friday showed. The pace of the output decline slowed somewhat from 29.8% in April and 33.9% in March, but the construction sector is still going through its toughest period since 2012.

Research institute Kopint-Tárki on Tuesday said it lowered its GDP growth projections for Hungary for this year and next to 2.2 percent and 2.7 percent, respectively, because of the slower-than-expected recovery and downside risk posed by the UK’s decision to leave the EU. Earlier, Kopint-Tárki had projected GDP growth of 2.4 percent for 2016 and 2.9 percent for 2017.

Ratings agency Moody’s Investors Service upgraded the outlook of Hungary’s banking system to positive, the rating agency said today in a report entitled “Banking System Outlook - Hungary”. Moodyʼs noted, however, that government support for banks in the EU, including Hungary, is less certain under the provisions of the EUʼs Bank Recovery and Resolution Directive.
