What can one say about the newly introduced ethics textbook for Hungarian fifth graders? For starters, it is not, strictly speaking, an ethics text. Ethics is not a branch of religion, and being ethical is not the same as following the law or adhering to societal norms. So a textbook that lauds religious virtues and advocates unquestioning civil obedience doesn’t belong in an ethics class.

Twenty-two years ago, on August 20, 1991 Blessed John Paul II has celebrated a holy mass at Heroes’ Square. In honour of this mass, the Municipality of Budapest has placed a memorial tablet in front of the Museum of Fine Arts. The tablet was blessed by Cardinal Primate dr. Péter Erdő and during the event Mayor István Tarlós has given a speech.

A special feature of this year’s events is that the series of programmes Nagyon Balaton (Very Balaton!) will include colourful family events, concerts and fireworks in several towns along the shores of Lake Balaton to commemorate the foundation of the Hungarian State.
