International Arts Festival in Budapest to Feature a Wealth of Performances from 1st to 12th April
The Bartok Spring International Arts Weeks between April 1 and 12 in Budapest will feature contemporary opera and dance productions, jazz, and star performers of Baroque music, organisers said on Wednesday.

The festival will open with a photo exhibition on Bela Bartok's work as a composer and as a collector of Hungarian folk music, Csaba Kael, the director of the organiser Palace of Arts (MUPA), told a press conference.

Performers will include giants of Baroque music such as soprano Julia Lezhneva, who will sing in Vivaldi's Tamerlano at Mupa, Kael said. The English Baroque Soloists and the Monteverdi Choir will perform John's Passion by Johann Sebastian Bach, conducted by Peter Whelan.

World-renowned conductor Sir John Eliot Gardiner will lead The Constellation Choir & Orchestra playing Bach cantatas and the Easter Oratorio, he said.

Dance performances will include Pina Bausch's Vollmond by the Tanztheater Wuppertal, The Inner Child by the Yvette Bozsik Company and a premiere of The Innermost Room by the Szekesfehervar Ballet Theatre, featuring music by violinist Felix Lajko.

The Latvian Opera and Ballett will perform a modern dance piece on the life of genius dancer and choreographer Vaclav Nijinsky. Kael himself is directing a contemporary opera Sindbad, the Omani Sailor, a cooperation of Mupa and the Royal Opera House of Oman.

Jazz performers will include The Bad Plus and Peter Gerendas with his children, playing in the House of Music. The Red Axes will perform at the Akvarium Klub.
