The government is ready to face European Commission probes into Hungary’s supermarket oversight fee and health-care contribution payable by tobacco companies, government office chief János Lázár said. He insisted that the Spar supermarket chain and tobacco maker Philip Morris had filed complaints against Hungary in Brussels, and the government is ready to “argue its case”.

A bill on “implementing fair market practices” in commerce submitted to Parliament by the economy minister on Tuesday would prohibit big supermarkets and discount shops from opening in the area of Budapest’s World Heritage sites.

Suddenly shiny Spar, Lidl, and Aldi stores have appeared in formerly unused street front retail space in classical old buildings in busy inner city locations in Budapest. Traditionally these chains choose locations in the suburbs or just outside town with adequate space in new facilities and large parking lots. Why this compromise in shelf space and business plan? Why now?
